NWCA wrestling debuted on the KU campus Saturday in a triangular between KU, Colorado and Northwest Missouri. Colorado pounded the Bearcats of NWMSU 42 to 14 to open the night.

A shortened squad of Jayhawk Grapplers won 5 out of 7 matches but gave up forfeits to come out just short losing 25 to 30 in the team score to the Buffalos. The NWMSU dual was halted due to time constraints after two matches and will be completed at a later date.

KU highlights and results

The wrestling Jayhawks scrapped hard and were highly competitive and aggressive. A crowd of close to 100 spectators watched the action.

125lb Freshman Andrew Poulind of St. Louis picked up a pin in an exhibition match and a tech fall decision. He dominated his Colorado opponents with a front headlock series and cradles.

133lb Frosh Josh Raimerez of Olathe North went one and one on the evening. He scored a major decision against Schiffer of Colorado 12-3 and lost an 8-0 decision to Schwartz of NWMSU. Josh opened up a brow in the early minutes of his NWMSU match limiting his ability to be offensive.

In a surprise appearance, KU wrestling club student president Nathan Harthston of Shawnee Mission South recorded a fall at 184lbs for the Hawks. Thinking he had a forfeit, Nathan took the mat and then pinned Pablo Perez at the 2:18 point.

Defending Southwest Conference champ Brandon Numrich of Scott City, stepped up a weight class to battle Colorado and give the Hawks a shot at winning the dual outright. Brandon was game but gave up almost 20lbs. neutralizing his low level attacks losing 9-4, but saving valuable team points.

SM East Alum Mark Robinson squared off against wrestler Ritchie Muotoux at 235. Moutoux, a decorated former Division 1 wrestler had 20 lbs and 6 yrs on Mark. The two wrestled an aggressive scrambling match that had Moutoux come out on top 14 to 8.

Special thanks to Gary Mayabb for officiating the matches, Vince Nowak for his support and assistance. The families and friends that came out to support KU wrestling and the strong showing of the Jayhawks.

Klint,

I really had a great time watching this event. I was pleasantly surprised by the size of the crowd. You have a great bunch of wrestlers and families too. I was wondering what Nathan was thinking when he was moving those bleachers into the gym but they were certainly needed. I don't know what you guys did to Nathan but he was a beast in that match. Mark Robinson had that match at 7-7 but I think the bigger guy just kind of wore Mark down at the end. Mark gave him a great match though. Klint you are going to give Randy Hinderliter some competition for match reporting that is a very good reporting of the action last night.

I am very impressed with the job that Klint Deere, Shane Miller and Nathan Hartshorne are doing this year with the KU NCWA Wrestling Club team. I think you guys have the club going in the right direction. They looked good wrestling and they seemed to be enjoying their teammates and the competition. I also want to mention for recognition your son and his friends who worked so hard in helping you setup the gym for the event and served as table workers for the event.

Great work to all and I am excited to see how the rest of the season will develop for the entire KU wrestling club. Good luck guys.
