Cards pin loss on Newman

By Mack McClure

Sports Editor

Labette Community College wrestling coach Joe Renfro took a seat when the Cardinals' 157-pound sophomore, Luke Elmore, stepped onto the mat to face Newman University senior Brad Lies Wednesday night at the LCC Multi-purpose Building.

After all, Lies was a two-year wrestler at Labette, so he had mixed emotions about coaching his returning All-American against one of his former athletes.

So LCC assistants Dustin May and Kenny Taylor assumed the duties of pacing the circle, barking instructions to Elmore, who was decisioned by Lies, 7-4.

"Lies is one of the kids that wrestled here (at LCC) and he's a very talented young man at 157 pounds," Renfro said. "I think Luke is a good wrestler, too, but when you put a senior against a sophomore, sometimes things like that are going to happen.

"You hate to say this, but you don't want a guy that has been though your program come back and then have one of your young pups beat him. I'm always gunning for our guys, but it's kind of a mixed emotion. I don't even coach matches like that, just because of the plain simple fact that you feel like you're betraying one of the other guys, so I just try to stay neutral."

Labette, ranked No. 3 in the latest NJCAA Division I wrestling poll, won the final five matches of the dual and posted a 31-12 match win. It was a homecoming for four former LCC wrestlers currently with Newman - Michael Copeland, Brett Jenlink, Ryan Smith and Lies.

"I think, all-around, our guys competed really well and I think they were kind of up for it," Renfro said. "They did a good job.

"Every time we step out there, we get a chance to videotape our guys and see what we're doing right and what we're doing wrong. Obviously, we made quite a few mistakes - whether the match score showed it or not - and we'll go back to the drawing board and work on it."

Tommy McCarty (174) won by decision, 9-5, before Labette teammate Alex Saunders (184) won by major decision over Nathan Brenner, 11-1. That win increased the Cardinals' lead to 17-12.

"Saunders is a veteran for us and he's an All-American," Renfro said. "He's been in there and he knows what he has to do and he goes out and gets the job done."

LCC's Elijah Martinez (197), spurred by a takedown for a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period, captured a 10-1 decision over Chris McGrew. He also had a takedown with 1:08 left in the second period, increasing his lead to 5-0, before finishing off McGrew with a three-point maneuver with eight seconds left in match.

"Elijah got beat by that kid in December and came out there and kind of took it to him," Renfro said. "He's finally coming around and he's doing a lot better."

Josh Baldridge (133) of the Cardinals made quick work of Copeland with a pin.

"Baldridge went out there and buried Copeland like he was just a first-year wrestler and he's been around the block. He wrestled for us a couple years ago, been down to Bacone and now back to Newman.

"Baldridge just treated him like he was in junior high and that's just Josh Baldridge."

Also for LCC, heavyweight Willie Weber won by fall over Jenlink with 0:48 remaining in the first period.

Cory Allison (149) didn't make weight, so his match with Kris Luna was an exhibition.

Elmore, who finished fourth last season at the national meet, is currently ranked No. 1 nationally in the first rankings of the season at 149 pounds. But now he's moved up to the 157.

Allison is ranked second at 141, and Saunders is ranked fourth at 184. The threesome will be seeking a return trip to nationals, where Allison finished fifth, Elmore fourth and Saunders seventh as the Cardinals captured the national championship.

Moreover, McCarty is currently ranked No. 1 at 174 and Tim Elliott is ranked No. 5 at 125.

"We've got a good core group right there, if we can just get them all in there together," Renfro said.

The Cardinals return to the mat this weekend for the 2006 Cliff Keen/NWCA National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Saturday and Sunday.

Dang Chenoweth. Looks like you're good, but you guys couldn't come close to hanging with LCC as a team.

It was a close dual until they got some momentum going, and when that happened they started blowing the score wide open. I look forward to our dual with them next week at our home this time. I think we have the potential to do a lot better against them as long as we don't give them that momentum again.
