Wrestlers Fall Twice in Final Day of Virginia Duals


HAMPTON, Va. --- After wins over Old Dominion and Missouri Friday at the Virginia Duals, the wrestling team dropped matches Saturday to Indiana and Cal State-Bakersfield.

The Hoosiers bested the Mocs 30-14, while Cal State outpointed UTC 25-11.

Jon Sioredas continued his outstanding season with two wins on the day. The senior who wrestles at 165 pounds scored a 13-5 major decision against Indiana and defeated his Cal State-Bakersfield opponent 5-3.

Michael Keefe (141) also won two matches Saturday. Keefe earned an 8-3 win over Indiana and a 14-7 win over Cal State-Bakersfield.

UTC runs its record to 9-9 in dual matches.

Nebraska won the Virginia Duals title with a win over Indiana in the finals.

UTC Wrestling Defeats Defending SoCon Champ The Citadel, 29-7

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team opened the Southern Conference season Saturday by defeating The Citadel at Maclellan Gym, 29-7.
The Citadel, the defending SoCon Champion, registered only two victories at 157 pounds and HWT.
We had a great effort from everyone,” UTC Head Coach Terry Brands said. It was an exciting and competitive match.”
Chattanooga’s Jon Sioredas, ranked No. 6 nationally at 165, improved his record to 18-1 by defeating Dan Thompson, 19-4.
Travis Piccard, The Citadel’s highest ranked wrestler (No. 13) at 157 pounds, won his match over Lance Rogers, 12-4.
The Mocs, 10-9, travel to Boone, NC to take on Appalachian State, Saturday, Feb 5 at 2 p.m. The Citadel, 1-5, hosts VMI on Thursday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m.

Wrestlers Remain Perfect
in SoCon With Win
at Appalachian State


BOONE, N.C. --- The wrestling team used two pins and a major decision Saturday to account for 16 of UTC’s team points as the Mocs won their second straight Southern Conference match, 28-12 over Appalachian State.

The Mocs recorded pins at 125 pounds and 165 pounds. Senior Matt Pitts won by fall over John Stanley at 125, and senior Jon Sioredas pinned Ajay Foreman at 165. Sophomore Michael Keefe scored a 12-5 major decision over Jason Jones as 141.

UTC earned four straight victories at 165, 174, 184 and 197. After Sioredas’ pin, junior Dan Peterson out pointed Corey Pendergrass 11-5 at 174. Junior John Davis defeated Sean McIntosh by the same score at 184, and senior Josh Ward notched a 6-3 win decision over Rockey Richey at 197.

Freshman Wayne French provided UTC’s other victory, a 2-1 decision over Eric Burns in the 149-pound class.

The Mocs, who improve to 11-9 overall and 2-0 in the SoCon, head to Greensboro, N.C., to take on the UNC Greensboro Spartans Sunday at 2 p.m. UNCG is also 2-0 in the league. The Mountaineers fall to 5-9 overall and 1-3 in the league.

Wrestlers Defeat SoCon Foe
UNC Greensboro 28-6

GREENSBORO, N.C. --- The wrestling team won eight of 10 matches Saturday to defeat UNC Greensboro 28-6 in a Southern Conference dual.

The win improves UTC’s SoCon record to 3-0, 11-9 overall, and leaves the Mocs in sole possession of first place. The Spartans, who entered the competition at 2-0 in the league, fall to 2-1 and 8-4 overall.

The Mocs grabbed an early 10-0 lead by claiming the first three matches. Senior Jon Sioredas outscored Mark Ring 24-10 in the 165-pound match to lead off the competition. Sioredas, ranked as high as No. 6 nationally, won his eighth straight match.

Dan Peteson followed with an 8-6 overtime win over Joe Lowe and 174, and junior John Davis notched a 13-7 victory over Scott Fisher at 184.

The Spartans got on the board at 197. Daren Burns, the current SoCon Wrestler of the Week, registered a 6-1 win over senior Josh Ward.

Freshman Wes Taylor’s 10-2 major over heavyweight Brett Reed increased UTC’s margin to 13-3, and the Mocs tacked on four more wins to pull away.

Senior Matt Pitts decisioned Joe Kemmerer 5-3 at 125, sophomore Josh Keefe recorded an 18-5 major over Chris Bencivenga at 133, and sophomore Michael Keefe earned a 17-7 major decision over David Johnson at 141.

Andrew Krieger defeated UTC’s Wayne French 4-2 at 149 for UNCG’s other victory.

UTC’s sophomore Jake Yost rounded out the scoring by edging O.T. Johnson 4-3 at 157.

UTC hosts Southern Conference opponent Davidson Saturday at 1 p.m.

Wrestlers Shut Out Davidson, 49-0

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The wrestling team posted its third shutout of the season Saturday with a 49-0 Southern Conference victory over Davidson.

The win clinches at least a share of the SoCon regular-season title for the Mocs, who improve to 13-9 overall and 4-0 in the league. It was the team’s fourth straight victory. Davidson falls to 7-6 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

“We had an opportunity to get ready today, and we didn’t let it slip away,” UTC Head Coach Terry Brands said. “We will continue to build on what we are doing. This gets us up for good postseason positioning and the shutout with help with our seedings.”

The Mocs recorded four pins on the day. Senior Matt Pitts started things off in the first match by pinning Patrick Coman. It was Pitts’ team-best 11th pin. Freshman Javier Maldonado (133) and sophomore Michael Keefe (141) followed with back-to-back decisions for a quick 12-0 lead.

Freshman Wayne French (149) extended UTC’s margin to 16-0 with a 16-8 major decision over the Wildcats’ Benjamin Graham. Sophomore Jake Yost added three points with a 7-4 victory over Matt Pendle.

The bottom half of the lineup combined for 30 team points. Senior Jon Sioredas, ranked sixth in the nation at 165 pounds, improved his overall record to 21-1 by pinning Trebor Clavette. Sioredas and Keefe each won their 10th consecutive match.

The Mocs earned 12 points on an injury default at 174 and a forfeit at 184. Junior Dan Peterson, who was ahead on points at 174, was the beneficiary of the injury default.

With UTC leading 37-0, senior Josh Ward and freshman Wes Taylor closed out the match with consecutive falls. Ward pinned Jayson Powers at 197, and Taylor recorded his first pin of the season over heavyweight Joseph Scognamiglio to provide the final margin.

The Mocs travel to nationally-ranked Missouri Wednesday and close out the regular season Feb. 20 with the finale against SoCon foe VMI. Davidson hosts The Citadel Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Wrestlers Fall Short at Missouri, 22-15


COLUMBIA, Mo. --- The Missouri wrestling team spotted UTC a 12-point lead Wednesday before storming back to win six straight matches and defeat the Mocs 22-15.

Ben Askren’s pin of UTC’s Daniel Peterson at 4:48 of the 174-pound match put the Tigers ahead for good, 16-12.

The Mocs, who fall to 13-10 overall, jumped out to a 12-0 lead by winning the first three matches. Senior Matt Pitts scored an 11-3 victory over Tim Kephart at 125, sophomore Josh Keefe pinned Tyler McCormick at 133 and sophomore Michael Keefe defeated Josh Wagner 7-3 at 141.

Missouri cracked the scoreboard at the 149-pound match. Cody Greene’s 14-3 major decision over Wayne French kicked off the first of six consecutive victories.

Brad Cieleski registered a 3-1 win over sophomore Jake Yost at 157, and Tyron Woodley’s 3-2 decision over senior Jon Sioredas at 165 cut UTC’s lead to 12-10. Woodley’s win marked just the second loss of the season for Sioredas who entered the dual with a 21-1 record and eight straight victories.

Askren’s pin pushed the Tigers ahead 16-12. Matt Pell edged junior John Davis 7-6 at 184, and Jeff Foust got past senior Josh Ward 10-4 at 197 to increase the team margin to 22-12.

UTC freshman Wes Taylor scored a 5-3 decision over Clint Freeman at 285 in the final match of the night.

The Mocs host VMI Sunday at 1 p.m. at Maclellan Gym in the regular-season finale.

Wrestlers Blank VMI; Claim SoCon Regular-Season Title

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The wrestling team recorded four pins and a technical fall Sunday and shut out VMI 50-0 to complete an undefeated Southern Conference season and claim the SoCon regular-season championship.

The Mocs registered their fourth shutout of the season and won their fifth dual in the last six outings. They improved their overall record to 14-10 and went 5-0 in the conference. VMI drops to 6-6-1 and 2-3 in the SoCon.

“To the people in the stands, it may have looked like a dominating performance,” UTC Head Coach Terry Brands said. “But I noticed some things that we still need to work on and still need to perfect. We have less than two weeks before we head to the conference championships, and we will hit it hard on the practice mats until then.”

UTC recorded four pins in the first six matches. Senior Matt Pitts pinned Jeremy Adams at 125 pounds, sophomore Michael Keefe pinned Jay Carter at 133, sophomore Jake Yost won by fall over Chris Hardy at 157 and senior Jon Sioredas notched a fall over Tommy Cunningham in the 165-pound match.

The Mocs threw in three major decisions and a technical fall for good measure. Freshman Wayne French blanked Sam Alvarenga at 157 with a 16-0 technical fall. Sophomore Josh Keefe scored a 15-7 major over Tyler Anthony at 133, junior Dan Peterson outscored Dustin McCabe 21-7 at 174 and junior John Davis defeated Jeff Sale 20-10.

Freshman Wes Taylor defeated Brian Yannetti 11-6 at heavyweight. Senior Josh Ward won by forfeit at 197.

The match was the final home match for Pitts, Sioredas, Ward and Drew Roberts. The SoCon Championships take place March 5 in Greensboro, N.C.
