It has been reported on the national forums that All - American Wrestling Supply, (a Company selling wrestling supplies), has prevented the trading or selling of singlets at the national events, including Kids Nationals and the upcoming Fargo tournament. I know that this is a common and staple part of the events for many of the kids. I am pasting here my comments on the national board as was a reply to Ted Witulski's comments there.

Ted not your fault here and you should have never been brought into it but have to say this, as far as American Wrestling Supply enforcing this part of their contract; they have just lost my business. Frankly, I have no issue with kids that even sell their singlets because for many of them it is how they earn some spending money while at this tournament. God forbid that a high school or younger kid have a little spending money, especially after their parents have had to dish out all of the money to get them there. The singlet trade, and yes, selling of singlets by some, is one of the traditions that the kids have that allow them to have some fun. Nothing like a large company doing their part to take the fun out of the sport for the kids. Nothing like me doing my part to not give that company any sales. By the way I think that each state should post that American Wrestling Supply is enforcing this component of their contract on their individual state web sites. Nothing like a little consumer pressure in my opinion. I will be writing a letter of this effect to American Wrestling Supply as well, if I can obtain their contact information.

Here is the contact page for All American Wrestling Supply. I would as well encourage each individual to contact them and let them know of your frustration.

Thanks Richard, when needing info you are "Da Man." The email link is also listed, it would be a shame for kids to not be able to take part in this.

I am not taking a side here but put yourself in the place of All-American. You sign a contract w/ USA Wrestling that says you will be the only vendor. You send employees and merchandise to the forum at considerable cost. You agree to pay USA Wrestling a percent of your profit. You are all set to go when suddenly hundreds of other vendors (the kids with singlets) appear and start selling the same thing. I don't understand why someone would be upset w/ All-Amercian. They are just asking that their contract be respected.

Think of it this way. You sign a contract with your local high school so you can have exclusive use of the gym for wrestling practice on Monday nights. You show up on Monday and their are 100 kids playing ball in the gym thus affecting your practice. Wouldn't you expect the school to clear the kids out so you could practice? Wasn't that what you contracted for? Now the kids may be upset that they are getting kicked out of the gym but whose is at fault? You for trying to hold your practice as contracted? Or the school for entering into a contract giving one person exclusive use of the gym when they knew a lot of others wanted to use it also?

Mike - you are letting USA Wrestling off to easy. You said it isn't their fault. It is absolutely their fault. They are the ones who told All-Amercian they would be the exclusive vendor. USA Wrestling certainly knew that trading singlets was popular. USA Wrestling could have put into the contract w/ All American that trading of singlets by wrestlers would be allowed. But they didn't. Most likely because they wanted a higher piece of the profit.

Nothing is going to stop the singlet trading. At most it will move to a location outside or across from the Fargo Dome or at the dorms.

Thank you Barry!

I was going to make a statement last night, however I did not feel like arguing with Mr. Furches.

The contractual arrangement can further be compared to the food vendors at the sites where the events are held. A contract is signed whereby the arena receives a certain percentage of the profits, and in return, the arena allows to limit the competition, and will not allow me or my child to enter the arena with any food items. The arrangement also allows the food vendor to participate in price gouging.

Fact is, USA Wrestling profits from the contractual arrangement, and if a few kids in the stands trade a singlet or two, All American Wrestling Supply will not know. The trading of singlets, if it interferes with sales of consigned merchandise of All American Wrestling Supply, directly affects the profits of both All American Wrestling Supply and USA Wrestling.

I encourage all parents to purchase from All America Wrestling Supply, as they do support our sport.

Reply from Ted Witulski on the above referenced link from The Mat.com

Sorry everyone that this is such a contentious issue. By no means should my remarks be construed to paint All-American as the bad guy especially since I've learned more since originally posting on this.

Apparently at some of the regional and national events that have been hosted by USA Wrestling there have been complaints received that some younger kids have been targets of bullying. "Buy this" or else type of behavior. Because there are events where wide ranges of ages, and for that matter sizes of kids are in attendance unsavory abusive threatening actions cannot be regulated easily.

I believe the blanket policy is out of necessity that USAW and event staff have other more important issues to deal with, making it easier for security to enforce the "new" rule. It sounds as if this is the case of a few bad apples spoiling the whole bunch. My apologies to the All-American team for assuming that the USAW contract was the primary reason for the ban on singlet trading.

Sincerely,

Ted Witulski

NCEP Manager

Well, well, Richard never known you to argue with anyone, . It is not a matter of argument here, individuals can take whatever perspective they choose. The original posting of this on USA Wrestling's The Mat Forums was on the youth page. After reading it and looking at it I did then, and still do, have issues with the decision apparently being enforced. By the way I did post it on the high school page on the Mat and on both pages, youth & high school the overwhelming majority of individuals are opposed to the postions being taken on the trading and selling of singlets. Not only does it exclude any sales of the singlet, but it excludes the trading, a long held tradition at Fargo. A tradition that has far more concern being expressed on the national forums than appears to be here on the Kansas forums.

Any individual can make whatever decision they choose, I still will refuse to purchase any items from this company until they allow the tradition of singlet exchange by youth that has gone on for numerous years in the past to continue. Can we disagree about that? Sure, you give them all of the business you want, and I'll just give my business to someone else while at the same time support a part of USA Wrestling in some other way. By the way, USA Wrestling even promoted the concept of trading singlets in the past and used the press off of the hobby of many youth to promote USA Wrestling in those articles. I just don't understand the double standard on their own part on this issue. Promote the trading of singlets one year, then be a part of banning and threatening those who trade the next year.

I hate their stuff anyway. I have been to three big tourneys in the post month with all the same boring stuff. We haven't spent much with the USAW tourneys ever since they changed to All American. A little excitement on the T-shirts would be nice. Or at least something different.

Ms. Jenni

I have also witnessed and particiated in "singlet trading" for years and have yet to feel threatened.

Barry, I did not intend to give the impression that I am letting USA Wrestling off on this. My comment was to Ted Witulski who was inadvertently brought into the discussion on The Mat forums. He through his own admission has nothing to do with the singlet trading issue; he is responsible for Coaches Certification, not policing singlet trading. My initial response, which is a copy here to the original comments on themat.com forums, was in response to people asking about information from Ted and his response. On those forums I made the response that USA did not have to agree with the contract stipulations and in that they were the one's contracting out the business they had a right to agree or disagree with the contract stipulations. There are many companies that would love to have that business.

As to All-American’s contribution back to USA Wrestling: What does that mean? Is it like the gumball companies that promote they give to a charity? Do we know how much they contribute back? Hate to say it this way, but just because someone says they are giving back don't sell me on their product. They may be doing a great job, truth is I don't know and would like to see the figures of how much they give back. After all of my years with non profits learning what they tell you as opposed to what they really do don’t sell me on anything. Even if giving back though, when asking for my money, they have to give me some assurance of a quality product. In my opinion they just don’t have it, I, like Ms. Jenni have seen it and I’ll leave it at that. I'll continue to buy singlets or other wrestling materials from Sunflower who I know for a fact gives back to Kansans and wrestling. Not only do they give back, but they provide a superior product. As a consumer, this is important. As a parent, wanting the sport to be as fun as possible for the youth who wrestle is also important that they be allowed to have some fun and not have the sport about all work. For that reason, I support allowing them to trade or sell their singlets.

My last note on this, regarding the response of those opposed to allowing the trading of singlets at Fargo or other national tournaments. The reasoning of why just don't hold water to me. The responses on the national boards support my position in large here. In all of the tournaments I have ever been to where trading of singlets takes place, most all of them by the way. I have never seen a single fight, argument, or theft, the reasons some have used to not allow the trading/and/or selling. That don't mean they don't occur but their reasoning seems to me to be overstated and a fabrication of reality.

The free trade of singlets can only be regulated at the event site. Take one step across the street from Fargodome and "let the trading begin".
