I'm here in Sioux City, ready for the Silver College and the World Team Trials.
Though Kansas is not strongly represented in the Silver College, (which is disappointing given the proximity) I hope, a few of you make it the 5 or 6 hours (okay, 7 for Wichita) for one of the greatest wrestling events ever.
I have reports that Eric Akin will not be competing due to an injury. This will be the first Trials Eric has missed in, I think, 13 years.
However, Kansas will be represented by our National Champion, Zach Roberson! After winning the Nationals last month in Vegas, Zach is the odds on favorite, to represent Kansas and the United States at the World Championships!
I'm trying to think, but I believe Zach could be the third Kansan on the World Team. Eric Akin and Melvin Douglas proceed Zach's attempt!
Okay Kansas, get off your fannies, take out a second on your home, pay the 2.60 a gallon for gas, and get to Sioux City! I predict ... you won't be disappointed!!!!
p.s. When you get here, say HI!

I'm looking forward to see Steph, Eric and all the Akin's this weekend.
As far as the Silver College goes, we have one session left tonight with Olympic Champ, Steve Frasier. Also, today we had technique sessions by Dave Bennett and Mark Schwab. And a couple of classroom sessions by Ted Witulski and myself.
Attending from Kansas are Darwyn Tomlinson from KC Washington HS, and also arriving this morning were Jerry Bauerly of Olathe South and Tony Whitaker from Shawnee Mission South.
There are about 21 coaches attending and it is a dynamite group of guys to be around. I always look forward to this week and all the networking with coaches from around the Nation. This week, will be a blast!

Swayz and I have finally made it to Sioux City, and somehow managed to get a room right across from the venue. Randy, where are you staying at?

Hello All + Curtis! I'm staying at the Clarion. If I don't see you, tonight we are watching the Hughes v. Gracie fight at the 4th Street Sports Bar! $10 cover.
This morning, Zach lost to Zadick in a very close bout.
Great wrestling and those that couldn't make the trip, you're missing out!

All in all there was some great wrestling going on and lots of great stories to be told from the road trip up with Chenoweth.
The anticipation of attending a National Level event where we would be sending our best to represent the US had Curtis and I excited...although we got a bit of exta sleep before heading over to the venue on Saturday.
Apparently we weren't the only wrestling fans that slept in, as that place was vacant as can be. The attendance was sad...more like pathetic. I know that a lot of the "more anticipated weights" were "randomly drawn and put on the 2nd day" We were right near the 3rd-4th match that Roberson lost and you could tell by the atmosphere of a lot of the action on day something crazy would happen on day 2.
I should mention the hilight of day1 in my opinion was the World and Olympic members past and present being honored (including our own Eric Akin) It was pretty sweet...quite a few "legends" were honored and it was a sight to see, I loved it when Jim "Baron von" Raschke came out personally with "the claw"
Day 2 was a day I woke up and had a weird gut feeling. I told Curtis that I thought upsets (and big ones would happen...and they did). Trent Paulson knocking off Joe Williams was pretty crazy, but nothing could prepare me from watching my old college teammate and good friend Mo Lawal get caught in a bad situation and pinned by Andy Hvorat. Les Sigman of DII UNO held his own against Mocco until getting hurt late in the 2nd period and was unable after that loss to compete again, otherwise I think he would have finished 3rd in the challenge tournament, as Konrad finished 3rd over Andy Patrick of Boise State (very small HWT) and it took him 3 periods to do so (almost giving up a 2nd period tech to the lighter wrestler.
All in all pretty good weekend...I'll let Curtis talk about the Terry Brands story and some of the funnier things that happend.
I'd also like to say Greco Roman needs more support...I was very displeased with USA Wrestling fans that left when Sieracki-Clark were battling in the final match of the night and people left before it was starting, following the last freestyle match. Greco needs some bigger name athletes for sure to help with fan base, Gator, NYAC and some others need to field some guys in those styles...Army and Marines dominated the field it seemed, and I couldn't begin to tell you anything really background wise about most of the greco guys except for a small handfull...Name recognition from guys like NCAA Champs from recent years would be a welcome sight in my opinion.
Anyway time to rest...long but fun weekend..and work this whole week to pay for it!

Alright, the long awaited Terry Brands story. Firstly, one of the main people we were there to cheer for was Aaron's good friend Mo Lawal. Secondly you must know about the Swayz's shirt. He has this shirt with the Brand's twins on it wrestling each other with one shooting a single leg and the other sprawling. Well Mo's coach is Terry Brands. So we went down to the 3rd place matches to route Mo on, and we were on the very bottom. Standing about 5 feet away from us was none other than Terry Brands. We looked at each other, and all 3 of us did that little guy nod thing acknowledging each other. Then we started watching the Greco match, and a few seconds later we heard Terry say "nice shirt." Then the Swayz tells a story about an experience he had with him, but then calls him Tom. Then Terry only says "I'm Terry". We then had a long conversation about Mo's previous match where he was caught and pinned. It was pretty cool. I must say I was impressed by his friendliness to not only us, but to all the kids that kept interupting him for autographs. He really is a class act.

I agree 110% Curtis...not only was Terry awesome, but a majority of the athletes there that weekend along with coaches were pretty laid back.
I remember hanging out after they announced all the members of the World Team and there were seriously maybe 40 people left in the stands. Curtis and I stuck around and talked with Jason Bryant from Intermat for a while and a very nice lady from CMSU as well. Next thing we know Dremiel Byers the Greco Roman WTT Champion, shakes Jason Bryant's hand and then thanks Curtis and I for being there to support USA...for those that have never seen Byers, he's massive!!! His shoulders were as broad as Curtis and mine combined!
We also had a great time hanging out that night with Mo, Tony Gansen (formerly of Central Michigan), and Russ Davie (Cleveland State alumn) among several others.
Crazy and fun week, and lots of great wrestling to go with the plethora of carnivals in town and Thristy Penguins!!! LOL.

Of all the pictures on the Internet from the World Team Trials, it is interesting that Richard chose 3 Greco matches showing the controversial reverse lift! I don't know a hard number but it seemed there were fewer lifts from the clinch this year than last.
However, there wasn't even one injury due to this type of lift! If done correctly, the reverse lift can be done dramatically and without causing injury.

Also, I did see the Swayz and Chenoweth at the trials this past weekend. I even sat with them most of one session! Unfortunately, duties took me away from spending more time with them!
On a side note, myself and about 300 other fanatics did get to watch the Hughes v. Gracie fight on PPV at a local watering hole Saturday night. The crowd reaction and roar of approval was greater in the UFC bout than any bout of the WTT! I would imagine that the Kool-Aid being served was a contributing factor.

My boys and I purchased the UFC package this past weekend for the first time and really had fun watching it. I think there are definitely some marketing tools to be picked up on from them!

It is interesting how ESPN would rather air hotdog eating contests, spelling bees, and re-runs of poker; than even one, MMA fight!

Great reply by Curtis, but I was going to say that maybe it was Mo looking for the end of the rainbow...did anybody else see where MO quoted himself as a LEPRECHAUN?!
