Some know that I have been going through some health issues, regarding pain in the lower back in the area of the kidneys. I went in several weeks ago after the pain got so bad that I couldn’t hardly take it any more. After abut 2 minutes of describing my pain and checking me out, my doc told me that I had worked my way to a colonoscopy (sp?). Well yesterday was the day.

I think one of the things that bothered me a little about this was that this was being done, not as a part of a regular routine, but to find out what was wrong with me. The obvious desire was to eliminate the worst possible thing first. In fact they normally schedule this procedure around the age of 50 and I am glad to say that for me I was about 4-5 years early for the procedure. Even the anesthesiologist, nurses and Doc knew that I would be a little more nervous than usual because of the fact that they had some concerns going in.

The bad news is that they didn’t discover the source of the pain and will have to do some other tests. The good news is they discovered a polyp which they removed. My doc is a former teammate and friend from of all sports Basketball while in college together. We have become good friends, apparently during the procedure he spoke to everyone about my son and how good a wrestler he was, that is what all the assisting staff told me in recovery. The doc said that it was good that I had this done, and while he wasn't certain, and wouldn't be for about a week, the polyp he removed had a 50% or so chance of being cancerous. If I had waited another 4 or 5 years to schedule the colonoscopy (sp?) like I normally would have, then it could have been bad. It was a good thing that they discovered it and removed it. Of course it may not has been cancerous but he believed it likely was. For those that knew about yesterday thanks for the thoughts and prayers. Yesterday was a little nerve wracking, but to be honest more so because it was an old friend who happens to be a doc more than anything. The actual procedure wasn't bad except for the lady screaming when she had requested to not be put out. The anesthesiologist and I kidded around about that. I did have and still have some stomach discomfort today.

Now why do I mention this? I couldn’t help but think of what if, if I had waited to have this procedure done. After the fact, neither could I think about how glad I was that I had it done, even though it didn’t resolve the issue with my pain. I know that for many, including most men, this procedure is embarrassing, but after the fact I was put out, and in reality don’t remember a thing other than cracking a joke about going to dream about BrokeBack and how my sermon on Sunday was about how old friends, (talking about my doctor) can be a pain in the rear. After the second joke the only thing I remember is waking up. While there was some minor discomfort in my intestinal area, likely due to the removal of the polyp, there was no other discomfort except for the night and day before.

I guess the simple reason for this is that we in the wrestling community have had a lot of heartache and tragedy over the last couple of years. It would be a shame to have to go through it again because of a pride issue. Men if you are having certain health issues, see your doc about it, I’m glad I did. If you are 50 or so have your doc set up for you the C. procedure as a part of your regular routine if you haven’t had it done. In the end (pun intended) it is worth it and in a situation like mine, you’ll be really glad you did.

Again, more than you'll ever know, thanks for the thoughts and prayers for those that knew about yesterday. The forums have become like family, good or bad, I don't know, it is just the way it is.

We will be keeping you in our thoughts and prayers and pray for the best. Also, glad to know you came thru the procedure just fine.

I couldn't agree with you more about going to the doctor when you are not feeling well and when there are "unknown" causes for pain. If my husband had went earlier, he might still be with us TODAY!

Hope everyone has a Happy Easter!!!

Leanna, it was Greg's experience that caused me to get checked out. Your husband keeps on giving and it is important for you and your children to know that.
