Dillon Archer took home a championship at 197 pounds and Lemuel Johnson and Ryan Sherry each placed for the Panthers at the Joe Parisi Open. The open featured over 500 wrestlers from some of the top programs in the nation.
Archer was dominant Saturday as he posted a perfect 4-0 record including a pair of falls and a major decision. His closest match of the day was his second match when he defeated Lincoln College's Myron Hamilton 8-4. He capped off the day by pinning Ian Early only 1:57 in to the first period to claim the championship.
"Dillon put on a fine performance today," commented head coach Wayne Petterson. "He works very hard and it's starting to show now with his progress and results."
Lemuel Johnson wrestled a team high six matches at the open. After dropping a 6-5 decision in his first match, Johnson rattled off 5 straight wins to claim a third place finish for the Panthers at 133 pounds. Wrestling on the backside of the bracket, he recorded three straight falls including one in 30 seconds and one in just over 1:30. He was just as dominant in the third place match, winning 18-3.
"Lemuel opened the day with a slow start in his first match but then was able to come all the way back through the consolation the long way to finish third. We really like what he is capable of doing for us."
The other Panther to place was Ryan Sherry. Sherry won his first three matches to advance to the semifinals before falling twice to finish sixth.
"Ryan battled hard and knocked off some tough guys. He continues to make progress for us as well."
The Panthers were wrestling without some of their top guys due to injury or sickness, but Petterson was pleased with his team's performance.
"Those guys that made the trip battled hard. We finished with a solid 22-18 overall record. Now will get to take a little time off and rest up and get healthy before our next dual."
The Panthers next action will be December 6 when they travel to Colby Community College before wrapping up the fall semester on the 15th at the Jet Invitational at Newman University
